Aliquando necesse est caffeam bibere in tenebris, musicam tristam audire et e finestra luces urbis intueri. Talibus temporibus, etiam fumando pro sanitate desistito, sigaretas vere desidero.

I was screwing with this LJ "haiku generator" thing and threw in your name for a lark - the results?

I am not really sure that haiku works out to the right syllables - if it does though, I'm impressed. Regardless, the mere idea of haiku in Latin is funny.

De haicuis Latinis

Eduardus Beluoso Mellique salutem:

It's not so funny. A couple of books full of them have come out in the last few years:

Haicu dum Ludo: Een bloemlezing van Latijnse haiku's. Leuven: Aulos, 1998. Genovefa Imme. Haikai Quotidiens: Haicua Cottidiana. Mazet St Voy: Editions Tarmaye, 1998.

Most of them are probably better than this one of mine:

Haicu

antIquO stagnO
ranunculus vegetus:
subitum stloppum

which being Englished is:

in the ancient pond
see the little frisky frog
hear the sudden splash.

5-7-5, Nonne?

Btw, the machine generated one doesn't qualify but the first two etyma seem curiously well chosen, for warm silicon that is. A first line like:

cord' et ratiOn'

would be a little better.

Valeatis atque secunda fortuna fruamini.

I'm not a Latin writer or speaker at all (I have other things to do with my time on Earth than learn "dead" languages, which is neither good nor bad, only true) so haiku (a Japanese poetry form) in a rarely spoken language like Latin (whether its "dead" or not to YOU) is funny to ME.

That all considered, ENGLISH "haiku" is funny to me.

Haiku as a concept is funny. Haiku in the language of Mother Church is funny as crap on marble tile.
